VAASTU SHASTRA | POOJA ROOM

In many houses a separate room called the Pooja Room is kept aside to house the deities and to offer Pooja. Many times, this room is also used for prayer and meditation. If there is not much space for a room, at least a small space is reserved for the Pooja mandir. Here are some of the Vaastu Guidelines to be considered, while designing a Pooja Room.

LOCATION OF A POOJA ROOM
  • The Pooja room should be in the East, North or North-East corner.
  • If it is a very big plot the prayer room can be constructed in the center of the plot or center of the building.
  • The Pooja room should always be on the ground floor and never in the basement.
  • The Pooja room should not be on the upper floors.
  • If you do not have space for a Pooja room, you can have a mandir in the North-East corner of the kitchen, with the deity facing west.
  • The Pooja room should never be in the bedroom.
  • Ensure that the Toilet is not adjoining the Pooja room, and not even above or below the prayer room.
LOCATION OF THE IDOLS IN A POOJA ROOM:
  • The idols or God's pictures should be kept in the North-East, East and the West portion of the Pooja room.
  • The faces of the idols should not face the North, because then the worshiper has to face South which is not advisable.
  • Idols brought from ancient temples and broken idols and torn pictures should not be kept in the worship room.
  • Idols should not be kept facing each other.
  • The idols should be kept at least an inch away from the wall.
PLACEMENT OF POOJA THINGS IN THE POOJA ROOM:
  • If a lamp is placed in the Pooja room, it should always be in front of the idol.
  • All the material related to Pooja room should be kept in the South-East of the room.
  • No bell should be hung in the Pooja room.
  • Never place any photographs to dead people in the Pooja room.
  • A cupboard or show-case can be placed in the southern or western wall, but it should be lower than idols.
  • One should never use the puja room for any other purpose like for storing things, or for hiding money or valuables.
INTERIORS OF A POOJA ROOM:
  • The roof of the prayer room should be lower in comparison to the other rooms on the same floor. One can use false ceiling for the same.
  • If it is possible to have a pyramid within the pooja room it should be created as it is auspicious.
  • It is good to have a threshold at the entrance of the Pooja room.
  • The Pooja room should not have a door with one shutter.
  • The Pooja door should have two shutters.
  • Keep the pooja room absolutely clean.
  • If meditation is going to last for more than 15 minutes one should not sit exactly facing the idols. One should sit near the western wall facing the East without having to look directly at the idol.

VAASTU COLOURS IN A POOJA ROOM:
  • White or light yellow marble work in the room is preferred.
  • The color of the walls can be white, light yellow or light blue.
VAASTU EVALUATION EXERCISE FOR THE POOJA ROOM:
  • This exercise is just a guideline to help you decide, where to position the Pooja Room in your house plan. In case you already have a house, then this exercise will help you to evaluate the location of your existing Pooja Room as per Vaastu Shastra principles. Accordingly, you can decide if you want to make some corrections and changes to your house.
  • Note the score for the following question and enter it in the score sheet.
  • Total the points.
  • The points indicate how favorable your House is, according to Vaastu.
  • The interpretation of the record of points is given at the end of the SCORE SHEET

This has reference to your subject website wherein I got valuable information regarding Vastushastra guidelines for puja room. Most attention seeking is your modesty to reply so many queries.
Sir/ Madam, I have a query for which I request you to reply and convey my thanks in advance. My in-laws have left idols in my Pooja room which are either bit broken or large in size and they have shifted to other house. Since the existing Pooja room shelf is in store, Can I replace the existing idols as I intend to build new Pooja room or buy small wooden modular Pooja mandir ? Kindly tell me the correct procedure .”
